Abbeyknockmoy U-14s captured the Justin Cheevers Cup on Sunday the 7th of April 2013 in memorable fashion, defeating a strong Carnmore team on a final scoreline of 2-7 to 1-4. The goal for Carnmore coming in the dying seconds of the game was the only blemish on the teams performance and especially the games man of the match, our 'keeper Matthew King who pulled off to fantastic saves that wouldn't look out of place in Croke Park on All-Ireland final day.

The team took inspiration from these fine saves in either half to become worthy champions. The most noticable and hearthing aspects of Abbey's play was the ground hurling, determination, will to win of these young men and their ability all weekend to find the goals required to kill off teams.

This weekend the team played in total 5 games, 200 mins of hurling from 6.30pm on Friday in Fr. Morley Park to 2pm in Pearse Stadium on Sunday. The team our course to capturing the Justin Cheevers Cup scored a fantastic 10-28 and only conceded 2-14 this weekend. Credit must got the players, management and above all the lads parents who were there throughout to roar on these young men.

The game itself started with Carnmore dominating the early exchanges, Abbey from a slow start and playing with the stiff breeze on a very dry surface began to take a foot hold into the game after a superb save from Matthew King from what looked like a certain goal. Abbey drew inspiration from this save and hit a goal courtesy of Jason Joyce, Colm Flaherty hit a point from play and Cathal Cooley hit a free. Abbey led at half time 1-2 to 0-4. Facing into the elements Abbey with their first time hurling along the ground kept the game flowing and hit a goal from Eric Neilan and five points, 4 frees from the captain Cathal Cooley and a point from play from Colm Flaherty. Again Man of the Match Matthew King denied Carnmore gaining a foot hold in the game and Abbey finished as champions. The teams toured the parish Sunday afternoon with bonfires light in celebration. Its a day that will live long in the memory.
