This years run in the woods was a success with over 170 entries running and over 30 family entries not to mention the wonderful childrens race which took place on the village green after the prizes for the main race had been announced.
The main event started on time with the assistance of Margaret Tierney from Console who sounded the horn at the starting line. It wasn't long before the 1st person made it home to the finish line with an impressive time of 17:57mins and the flow of people across the finish line was steady thereafter.

The placed finishers were:
  • Male Senior - 1st Johnny Lane, 2nd Brian Sexton, 3rd Kilian Dooley
  • Female Senior - 1st Marie Boyle, 2nd Deirdre King, 3rd Anita Murphy
  • Male Over 40 winner - Pat Dirrane
  • Female Over 40 winner - Anne Burke
  • Male Over 50 winner - Thomas Porter
  • Female Over 50 winner - Josephine Joyce
  • Male Over 60 winner - Jim Sheridan
  • Male Junior winner - Ronan Dirrane
  • Female Junior winner - Jordan O'Connor
  • 1st Male Club member - Brian Flaherty
  • 1st Female Club member - Leona Rabbitte
  • Juvenile 5km winner - Gavin Cosgrove

On the day there was plenty of support from club members and the surrounding community. Lets not forget that not only was this event for Abbeyknockmoy Hurling & Camogie Clubs but also from the proceeds a donation goes to CONSOLE, the national suicide charity. Last year we donated €1200 to Console and over the coming weeks when all the sponsorship is in and the costs deducted we'll be able to make a donation to Console for 2013. A cheque presentation will be held in due course to mark the occassion.

Abbeyknockmoy Hurling & Camogie Club would like to thank Tom Boyle, Claire Quinn, Aoife Connolly, Michelle Joyce & Leonie Finn for helping out with registration and data entry. To Sylvie & Miley Forde, Padraig O'Donnell, Paddy Flaherty, Brian O'Donnell, Mick Griffin, Keith Ruane, Brendan Geraghty, Aidan Flaherty, Pat Warde, John King, Mickie Connelly, Michael Flaherty, Paddy & James Coleman for marshaling the event.  Many thanks to Garda Mick McDermot for his assistance on the day. Mick Donnellan & Gabriel O'Connor of Coillte for permitting us to use the woods for this event and allowing access on the day. Sharon Gannon, the race direct would like to express her thanks and gratitude to everyone involved but a special thanks to Sean Moran who oversaw the marking out of the route and prior to the day itself he ensured that everyone and everything was where it should be on the day. Sharon also expressed her gratitude to Brian Griffin, Declan Molloy, Michael Coleman & Frank Gannon who were extremely helpful and offered endless assistance and advice along the way. To the lads from the club who drove around erecting signs & posters, a big thank you for your time which is generously given for all club and community related events without any hesitation. It's wonderful to be surrounded by such kind and generous people who time and time again freely give their time and assistance. Also a special mention to Marie Forde who multi-tasked between making sandwiches, promoting the event in the local newsletters, drove around picking up prizes and made up the goodie bags & every now and then for saving Sharon's sanity!

Another important job on the day was the water station which was kindly manned and very well run by Margo Van Oosterhaut with the help of Emma, Lucy, Ciara & Connor. Thank you to Kevin Kelly & his family for kindly allowing us the use of his premises as our HQ & also to the parents who provided sandwiches and other yummy treats. Special mention to Des from for providing our race numbers not only this year but last year also, they are a great product.

This year's event was AAI permitted and we'd like to thank Vincent Conway of East Galway Athletics for being our sponsor in applying for the permit on our behalf and indeed for the advice and words of encouragement during the whole process. James Lundon provided the timing and finish line results with the assistance of Vincent and Brian. It has to be said that James is a true professional, it was a pleasure to work with him and we look forward to doing so again in the future.
To our GAA counterparts in the Monivea/Abbey Football Club for once again kindly allowing us to use their parking & shower facilities this year. We hope we can return the favour some day.

There is a saying about a picture speaking a 1000 words and we are very lucky as a club to have the help of John Williams who is always on hand to take pictures of special club occasions. Also present on the day was John O'Connor a photographer who is well know amongst the athletics circuits. We are very lucky to have some kind sponsors who without their generosity they day just wouldn't be financially viable. Many thanks to Liam Challoner, & Galway Water 2U
Finally, to all who took part and helped make this a special day we thank you sincerely and we look forward to seeing you again at the 'Run in the Woods, 2014'
