Senior Hurling: Tommy Larkin’s 1-13 Abbeyknockmoy 0-12

Abbey will have come away from Ballinasloe last Friday night very disappointed that a winnable group match was lost to Tommy Larkin’s after being in a commanding position before half time.

Abbey played some excellent hurling in the first half with great points scored from out the field along with good interplay from the forwards. It was 7-2 after 20 or so minutes with Abbey scoring through Paul Flaherty (3f), and superb points from Trevor Mullins, Craig Kennedy, Damian Rooney and Danny Mullins. Larkin’s made it 7-4 with two frees from Jason Flynn before Paul pointed another free to make it 8-4. However, Larkin’s had a storming end to the half with 1-2 without reply and went in at the break leading 1-6 to 0-8.

The second half was equally frustrating for Abbey as indiscipline close to goal meant Larkin’s kept Abbey at bay through the free taking of Jason Flynn. Abbey got to within three points with a free from Paul and one from play by Danny. However, Abbey could only muster two more scores through frees from Paul as Larkin’s won out 1-13 to 0-12. A miserable evening was compounded with Tommy Farragher getting sent off after a clash prefixed by a fairly robust series of challenges from Larkin’s players which went unpunished.

Abbey definitely looked the more tired team towards the end especially with the concession of frees not normally associated with this team and three games in thirteen days didn’t help so a break this weekend is most welcome.

Moycullen’s win over Kiltormer sees them level on points with Abbey so at least one win from our remaining two games over Beagh and Kiltormer is a must to avoid any issues with relegation playoffs.

Team: Ronan Cooley, Tommy Farragher, John Culkin, Brian Costello, Trevor Mullins, Brian Flaherty, Padraig O’Donnell, Damian Rooney (0-1), Caelom Mulry, Eoin Blade, Paul Flaherty (0-7 frees), Danny Mullins (0-2), Craig Kennedy (0-1), Coleman Maher, Fionnán Garvey.

Subs used: Brian O’Donnell and Kenny Garvey.

Camogie Notes: U-8s have a blitz on Tuesday evening (10th May) in Castlegar at 6.30pm.

U-14 girls are away to Mountbellew this Thursday at 7.30pm.

U-12 North are away to Turloughmore with a date yet to be decided.

Hard luck to U-10’s who had a great battle with Castlegar in the rain on Saturday.

Training as usual Wednesday 7-8 for U-6, 8, 10, 12, and 14’s.
