Hurling: Congrats to the U-14 team & management on capturing the Justin Cheevers Feile cup for the 1st time at Pearse Stadium last Sunday in an action packed final against Carnmore. The competition played over 3 days commenced on Fri evening with 1st group game in Abbey where they beat T/Larkins on a scoreline of 2-5 to 0-3. The 2nd & 3rd group games were held in Woodford on Sat morning and Abbey defeated Kinvara on a score of 2-6 to 0-0 and followed up by beating St. Thomas on a score of 2-5 to 1-3 in a keenly contested match with Abbey topping the group to reach the Semi-final which was played in Clarinbridge on Sat. evening. Their opponents were Salthill/Knocknacarra where they also remained undefeated in the group stages. The game was a close encounter with Abbey having difficulty in coming to grips with the game due to combination of tiredness and the strength of Salthill team. However a strong 2nd half performance saw them through on a score of 2-6 to 1-3 to reach the final. In the final against Carnmore, Abbey played with the aid of the breeze in the 1st half to lead by 2 points at half-time which looked ominous for the team. On the resumption the Abbey players picked up their game and with a storming performance aided by the excellent goal keeping of Matthew King (man of the match) and went on to win on a score of 2-7 to 1-4. Over the course of the games there were some outstanding individual performances, too many to mention and great credit to all players and management for their commitment & dedication. A special thanks to G Fallon for looking after the players welfare and all the parents and supporters over the past few days. For the record the team was M King, S King, J Dooley, F Ward, P Muldowney, D Coleman, J O’Connor, E Neilan, C Cooley, S Conroy, C Flaherty, R Cosgrove, J Joyce, G Cosgrove, D Reynolds, K Boyle, C Higgins, Reece Forde.
