Consolation to our Under 16 team who lost the Connacht final last week-end against Tooreen in Tooreen Co. Mayo. Overall the team put in a spirited performance, however the loss of C Laheen through injury prior to the game, the long lay-off since the Co. Final were contributing factors coupled with four further players receiving injuries on the day and required substitution further weakened the Abbey challenge. To be fair to Tooreen who have a strong panel of players, they took the game to Abbey early on with some excellent hurling and built up a commanding lead by haft-time on a score-line of 1-6 to 0-3. Abbey put in a much better performance on resumption of the second half, however Tooreen matched them point for point and ran out winners on a score line of 1-13 to 0-9 and we congratulation them on their fine win. Overall it has being a very good year for these young hurlers and will recover from this defeat. Special thanks to management team of Brian Cooley, Keith Ruane & Aidan Flaherty who put in a great effort over the year in preparing the team. For the record the team was A Devane, T Ward, J Burke, C Murphy, F Garvey (inj), N Garvey, P Cooley (0-2), C Mannion (0-2), K Garvey, D Flaherty (0-5, 3f), M Mills, C Mulry (inj), D Maher, E Loftus, G Moran, S Miller, M Finn (inj), L McCarthy, D Moran, B Loftus (inj), J Flaherty, C Laheen, M O'Brien, C Mannion. Special thanks also to the O'Donohue family for providing the food & refreshments for the team, it was much appreciated.

Congratulations to our Minor team who captured the 1st Minor cup to the club last weekend where they overcame a strong Liam Mellows team in Loughrea in what can only be described as very challenging underfoot conditions. It was a credit to both teams that they managed to cope and serve up a game that was fitting for a Co. final where skill, passion and excitement were to the fore. In a keenly fought encounter where very little separated the teams, Mellows got off to a better start and were three points up after ten minutes before Paul Flaherty levelled the game with a well taken twenty meter free, for the remainder of the half it was nip & tuck with Abbey getting to the pace of the game and leading by two points at the break on a score line of 1-6 to 0-7. On resumption Mellows got back on level terms, both teams traded points with never more that a one point advantage. As the game was coming to the concluding stages, Mellows increased the margin to two points owing mainly to some wayward shooting by Abbey, however Abbey continued to press and got the break for the penultimate score when Kenneth Garvey raced through to score a cracking goal and on the puck out he added a further point to finish the scoring at 2-10 to 0-14. Overall it was a great win for Abbey with an excellent team performance with many heroes on the day and a fitting conclusion to the year with both the U-16 & Minor titles. Great credit goes to the management team of Keith Ruane, Brian Cooley & Aidan Flaherty who worked tirelessly in the preparation of both of those teams during the year. For the record the team on the day was D Keary, K Divilly, J Burke, S Joyce, N Garvey, P Flaherty (Capt) (1-4 F), P Cooley, Co Mannion, Ca Mannion, K Garvey (1-2), C Kennedy (0-1), J Moran, D Flaherty, C Blade (0-2), S King, Subs: A Devane, E Roche, C Laheen (0-1), E Loftus, M Mills, A McDonnell, T Warde, B Melia, C Murphy, B Brennan, M O'Brien, S Miller. Special thanks also to both Michael Vaughan Jnr & Snr for providing the food for the team and to S McQualter for the medical backup, it was much appreciated.

The Fr.O'Brien cup and shield came to a conclusion last week with Crumlin taking the honours for the 1st time against Monivea. In what was a very entertaining game with both sides committed to the cause of their respective schools, it could not be much closer with the lead changing a couple of times, however Crumlin held on for a narrow one point victory. In the shield competition held on Thursday, Monivea put in a very strong performance against a young Newtown side in a very entertaining game to collect the shield. Overall the competition held over the last 3 weeks was of a high standard, which was both entertaining and competitive. Special thanks to the management teams, namely Niahm Molloy, Vincent Brandley, Ann Keane & Tommy Devane who put in a lot of work in preparing the teams. Sean Moran, Mike Tarpey & Steven Ruane for lining the pitches and officiating at the games, it was much appreciated. Special thanks to Fr. Joe O'Brien for making the presentations on both days and finally to the parents for the great support for the respective teams & the people who helped out with refreshments.
