13th of March 2017 Club Notes

posted 14 Mar 2017, 08:02 by abbeyknockmoy gaa
Senior training Tuesday and Friday at 7:30. Senior team had a tough day at the office losing to Gort at the weekend by 6-23 to 1-5. A lot of players were missing through injuries and Galway duty but all the damage was done on the first half with five goals from Gort. While early in the year it is a worrying defeat and we hope we can pick things up fairly quickly. Next game will be against Sarsfields in Abbey this Sunday.

Juniors are playing Athenry in Athenry on Sunday. Check papers for time. Please look to Facebook and the Notes in local paper for underage fixtures. U-14 beat Liam Mellowes in first round of championship. Next up is Salthill in Abbey. U-13 training is on Saturday 5-6pm and Monday 7-8. New players welcome. Contact Adrian at 0877708056. No Under 10 training this Friday due to St.Patrick’s day. Find a good gable end for the week!

Last week we acknowledged the sad passing of Mattie Treacy, a long time dedicated club member, player, mentor & supporter of Abbeyknockmoy Hurling. From his playing days in the 1960's & 70's where he excelled on the hurling fields of Galway to management of our under-age teams and adult teams in the late 70's and 80's. As a true club member Mattie held several club officer ships over the years and was an avid fundraiser in helping to develop the club grounds from a green field site in the '70's to its present status. He instilled in our youth all that is good in sport and his devotion carried through to his own family who are also avid supporters of the club with Martin holding a number of club officer roles over the years. Despite his fading health in recent years, he continued to support the club teams and his presence at the County, Connaught & All Ireland final in 2016 was an indication of his love of the club and proud of its achievements. He may be gone but not forgotten as his legacy along with so many more is steeped in our club history. On behalf of Abbeyknockmoy club members & supporters we offer to Maureen, family and extended family members our deepest sympathies at Mattie's sad passing.

There was no jackpot or match 3 winner of last week's Crumlin Park House & Resource Centre Sponsored draw. Numbers drawn were 8, 21, 24 & 30. Sellers prize went to Thomas Shaughnessy. Lotto is now at €16,500 so we encourage everyone to buy a ticket every week. Remember, the club runs a very handy direct debit facility where your €2.00 per week is automatically entered for 52 weeks. There are two weeks free with this facility. Next week's draw takes place in McGann's Bar

As always, we appreciate everyone helping us out and by doing so everyone in the club and parish benefits from having a successful and well supported club.

You can renew your lotto at: www.myclubfinances.com/localhome.asp?LL_ID=668&CLB=1

Monthly draw payments of €240 can now be made to Brian Flaherty. First prize is always €700 along with three prizes of €100.

We are hosting a fundraiser and a charity cycle in aid of Cancer Care West on Saturday 19th August from Croke Park to Abbeyknockmoy. This promises to be a wonderful occasion and we ask any person who has ever sat on a bike to give this a go! The Croker to Abbeyknockmoy cycle is now up and running. We are looking for teams of 4 to cycle 50km each or whatever suits each rider. Individuals are also welcome. We ask that each person signed up raises €200-250 minimum between now and August. You can register your interest through Facebook or contact any club officer.

There will be plenty of stops on this cycle as it is not a race. The plan is to leave Croke Park at 8am and take our time via the old Galway road. This is the first time we have attempted such a fundraiser and we are delighted to be able to help Cancer Care West also. Snacks and drinks will be provided on the way but obviously have your own food too. There will be lead cars and broom wagons as with all charity cycles so no one will be left behind! Sponsorship cards have now been printed and are available from any club officer. T-Shirts will also be printed up for every participant.

Membership fees are as follows for the year: Please make sure to pay any club officer or team manager.
Adult Player €50.
Non-playing/Social Adult €20.
Student Membership €30.
Family Membership (All children under 18 years of age) €100. Juvenile Players €20.
Those in the monthly draw (€240 per year, €20 per month) are automatic members along with one other adult and all children under 18.

There will be a club meeting on Wednesday 15th March at 9pm. We ask that at least one person from each management team come along to update on activities and we will also be talking about lotto, membership and monthly draw.

Underage camogie starts this Wednesday 15th march at 6pm for U-6, 8, 10 and 12. Under 14 is from 7-8.

Congrats to everyone who received their medals at the weekend and a big thanks to Galway senior Niamh Kilkenny who presented the medals.

U-14’s had a good win over St. Coleman’s of Gort at the weekend. Next up for the team is an away game to Kiltomer
