Senior Hurling: Abbey continued their impressive group form on Friday evening against Kiltormer with a great 3-22 to 0-10 victory. They now play Killnadeema Leitrim this evening (Tuesday) in Ballinasloe in a preliminary knock out match. Abbey won 3 out of 5 in their group.

Abbey started very brightly with three points from Paul Flaherty (2) and Padraig O’Donnell. Paul then added to his tally with a goal as did Craig Kenned after great work out the field from Danny Mullins and Brian Flaherty. The score was now 2-5 to 0-4. Further points from Trevor and Eoin Blade were added to by a superb goal from Rico who hit Craig’s delivery first time to the net on the turn. Abbey were in complete control and Paul Flaherty scored the next three points to leave the score at HT 3-10 to 0-7. Kiltormer’s cause wasn’t helped by the red card to their centre back at the end of the half.

Abbey again dominated the second half and some of their interplay was excellent. Craig (0-2), Danny, Damian Rooney (0-2), Rico, Eoin (0-2) and the Flaherty’s left the final score 3-22 to 0-10. Defence was well on top also and Kiltormer couldn’t grab any foothold in the game. Abbey were also without Fionnán Garvey too who was on Galway duty on Sunday.

Abbey will find the going much tougher against Killnadeema Leitrim on Tuesday as they were a team who beat us a number of times in the intermediate grade in the last few years. However, Abbey are playing and hurling well and the spread of scorer’s right through the group games is a major source of help for the next game.

Overall it has been a very successful return so far to the senior ranks for Abbey. There was a two game blip midway through the group when concentration levels dropped against Killimordaly and more significantly Tommie Larkins. With that latter game we could have been in a strong position to go to Senior A. However a win over Killnadeema on Tuesday will still keep us in the championship.

Ronan Cooley Coleman Maher John Culkin Tommy Farragher Brian Flaherty (0-1) Brian Costello Trevor Mullins (0-1) Damian Rooney (0-2) Caelom  Mulry Danny Mullins(0-2) Paul Flaherty (1-9, 3f) Brian O’Donnell Eoin Blade (0-3) Padraig O’Donnell (1-2) Craig  Kennedy (1-3). Camogie Notes: The U13 girls had a hard fought win against Salthill in Abbey on Friday and are away to Mellows on Monday and away to Carnmore on Thursday with both games throwing in at 7.00pm.
