10th of April 2017 Club Notes

Seniors had a narrow one point loss to Kilnadeema-Leitrim at the weekend losing by 0-16 to 0-15. A draw was surely the fairer result but KL got a last minute winner and unfortunately a Paul Flaherty shot from way out the field trailed just wide to leave Abbey disappointed with this defeat.

Abbey were losing 9-7 at half time and at times in the first half it looked as if KL were going to have a bigger lead but Abbey with four points from Paul and one each from Jason Flaherty, Paul Cooley and Coleman Maher finished the half strongly. A double save from Dean Keary on his first championship start was crucial in repelling KL also.

The second half was nip tuck as well but Abbey could not get in front. Points from the two Flaherty’s, and Danny Mullins seemed to have secured a draw for Abbey but it was not to be.

Overall, a very good performance from the team who were missing a few players from the last few years. The group is already looking very tight with Moycullen’s draw with Athenry and a big win for Ahascragh over Killimordaly.

Team: Dean Keary, Philip Muldowney, Brian O’Donnell, David Carton, Trevor Mullins, Damian Rooney, Caeolm Mulry, Brian Flaherty (0-1), Coleman Maher, Paul Cooley (0-1), Paul Flaherty (0-9, 4f’s, 1 x 65), Fionnán Garvey, Danny Mullins (0-2), Eoin Blade, Jason Flaherty (0-1). Subs: Kenny Garvey.

Minor championship is next weekend. Fixtures to be confirmed.

With Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders out of the way it’s time for AHC to save cycling with their own version of the “Hell of the North” with our cycle from Croker to Abbey on August 19th. Sponsorship cards are now doing the rounds and we encourage everyone to get involved in any way large or small in this. While it is the main fundraiser for the club this year, it is also in conjunction with Cancer Care West so we hope you can support both causes.

We are looking for teams of 4 to cycle 50km each. Individuals are also welcome. We ask that each person signed up raises €250 minimum between now and August. You can register your interest through Facebook or contact any club officer.

There will be plenty of stops on this cycle as it is not a race. The plan is to leave Croke Park at 8am and take our time via the old Galway road. This is the first time we have attempted such a fundraiser and we are delighted to be able to help Galway Hospice also.

Club will provide free buttock cream for those not too used to the bike for a few years!!! But seriously this is a great cycle for any cyclist to have on their CV and it will be a great day and night afterwards in Abbeyknockmoy.
